Frequently Asked Questions

This page is for the planner, the person who likes to know the address, the schedule and my drink of choice before making a call.

Where is your office, and can we meet online?

My office is in Yeager Office Suites West in Plainfield, Indiana.

2680 E. Main Street, Suite 206, Plainfield, IN 46168

I also see clients online throughout Indiana and Michigan.

Some people choose the office and some choose the screen. We can do valuable work with either.

How does online therapy work?

For online therapy, you will need to be located in Indiana or Michigan. You will want a spot where you won’t be overheard and a secure internet connection.

Please have a photo ID ready for your first session. The rest is the same as if we were sitting in the same room.

Lots of clients love doing therapy in the privacy of their home or on a work break.

How do I get started?

Everything starts with a brief phone consultation. It is free and takes about 15 minutes.

You can set it up by calling me at (317) 961-8366 or emailing heather@hopecounselingsolutions.com.

After that call, you will have access to a private account in my electronic health record system. There you can sign consents for treatment and share a little more background.

Once that is complete, you can schedule your new client assessment. For ongoing sessions, you are free to book on your own, or we can settle the next one together at the end of each session.

How long is a typical session?

A standard session is about 50 minutes. If you need a longer session, we can discuss options.

Do you have evening appointments?

I do arrange evening sessions for those who could not attend therapy without them. This availability is limited and often has a waitlist.

To be truthful, I’m a morning person.

You’ll get the best from my work and the most flexibility in scheduling before 2 pm. I’ll gladly meet you for an early morning appointment, if that’s how you roll.

Do you take insurance?

I am out of network with all insurance companies. I do this for a few reasons.

The greatest is that your therapy work is private. An outside party does not need a say in what is necessary or beneficial for you.

That is your choice.

Many of my clients have out-of-network benefits that cover a portion of their sessions. To find out about yours, call the number on your insurance card and ask about out-of-network outpatient therapy benefits.

If you would like to file a claim, I can provide a superbill with all the necessary information. I accept all major credit cards, HSA and FSA.

Who do you work with?

I work with individual adults of all kinds, men and women alike. Everyone I see is 18 or older, so I do not work with adolescents.

Sessions are one-on-one, which means I do not see couples.

How long will I be in therapy?

Each person is different. Progress tends to come in a series of mini breakthroughs.

At the end of our first session, I can give you an estimate of how many sessions you will need to address your concerns.

Most clients meet 2 to 4 times a month for the first 1 to 2 months. Once their immediate concerns have resolved, they are able to come in less often.

Some of my clients view me as “the keeper of the story.” They continue meeting with me at regular monthly or bimonthly intervals to keep building new life patterns, or they call on me for support in challenging seasons of life.

Once you have worked with me, I aim to be available for your future therapy needs to the best of my ability.

Brainspotting or EMDR?

People have strong opinions about this, especially therapists.

When I decided to train in Brainspotting, I knew I only had the time and resources to pursue one of the two. So I interviewed a few therapists who were trained in both.

All of them reported liking the flexibility of Brainspotting and seeing similar or better outcomes for their clients.

Both are good. Both are based in neuroscience.

The research on Brainspotting is still catching up, so it has yet to earn the “evidence-based” label.

My own experience, along with the experience of countless folks around the world, tells me this modality does powerful work. Its use in therapy keeps growing.

There are other somatic and neuroscience-based modalities out there, too. I will always pursue educational opportunities that benefit my clients and their nervous systems.

What is your educational background?

I earned my Master of Science in 2001. I have been licensed as an Indiana LMHC since 2005 and as a Michigan LPC since 2022.

In 2020, I became Perinatal Mental Health Certified, with training focused on the emotional side of infertility and loss. That same year I became Brainspotting Certified, and in 2021 an approved Brainspotting Consultant.

Is your furniture comfortable?

I hope so! Please tell me if it isn’t!

Do I have to lie on a couch?

You can, but it’s not a requirement.

Should I wear waterproof mascara?

This may be advised.

Am I allowed to ask personal questions?

Sure. I aim to be authentic, but I keep some things private to protect the innocent.

Cats or dogs?

Dogs. All day. As long as they don’t growl at me.

Coffee or tea?

Neither! Diet Coke.

Road trip or plane ride?

Road trip.

Cold weather or hot weather?

Cold. Well, cool. Don’t hold it against me.

Hamilton or Hadestown?

All the best stories have catchy music. I try not to sing in the audience.

Now you know where I am, when I’m at my best and what I’m drinking. For a planner, that’s a pretty good start.
